The Flying J

Posted by Bettina (Los Angeles, United States) on 30 June 2010 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

I stopped for gas in Phoenix at ten at night at the Flying J, preparing for the last three hours up the mountain in darkness. I love truck stops and I wished I had more time. But I wanted to be awake, and hence alive, when I arrived.

Chris from Haute Loire, France

What a pleasure to follow you on the road, with your pictures, your words, your experiences. It is a journey, with sounds, smells, feelings ...
Superb light to this black and white, beautiful record.

Wherever you are, a short break at last for new coming start...how many liters of gas can you car eat?! Just let it eat more! This must be an exciting night!! Love those lights, transparent lights!

i get more and more into trouble with my romantic feelings about the traffic jam i had when you started your series. i now see how long it really took you to get to your goal and understand how dangerous it could be being tiered and cruisimng through the mountains at night. but because i love truck stops, too, like i love trucks and truckers biographical, i love this picture. the darken/lighten contrast is very cool and the details of the ceiling excellent.

30 Jun 2010 6:29am

@trilliana: Well, I lived to tell the tale. :) But it took a lot of loud music to get me up the mountain. :))

Phil David Alexander Morris from Canada

Great shot, who would know you are probably shooting from a convenience bar door. Love the spotlight effect on the ceiling. The b&w adds drama.

Wow ! The light is so beautiful... Truck stops are always a great place in the US, you're completely right ! Not the same story over here, they are mostly boring and dirty. Looking forward to the rest of your adventure ;)
Have a nice day Bettina !

What a fabulous B&W, Bettina : it shines wonderfully ! Just love those oily blacks & the gorgeous lighting ! That roof seems "on stage", like for a musical. And yet it's the silence we listen to here. Love the contrast of both feeling. Very elegant & clever image, my friend !

I don't know how you get your photos to look so shiny and perfect like this but I like it so much! It's a great shot and as with so many of your photos, there are so many details to take it. One could explore your shots for ages. Trust you arrived awake and alive!

I'm glad the trip isn't over yet. These stops are my favorite parts along the road. This is a particularily noir-ish one. Is it the femme fatale or the evil villain that appears in the next post?

I remember commenting a few post prior that Angelenos all have their own freeway stories. I share your pain or sciatica. At least treat yourself something something special. They brew some strong coffee in these truck stops, did you get a jug?

I'm really enjoying this "journey" with you. What a fantastic B&W this is! I love the contrast and lights. I also like the neat lines and composition. I don't know why, but something about this image reminds me of a SCI FI movie, maybe it's the lights - or maybe I just need a cup of coffee... :)
