The Romani

Posted by Bettina (Los Angeles, United States) on 27 December 2010 in Documentary & Street.

I had a long conversation with this man who was curious about my taking pictures in Echo Park. He is part of a family of gypsies that he can trace back for endless generations. He told me had a seventh grade education but spoke versedly an all kinds history. I had intended to walk up and down the street and just get a few shots for Christmas in the rain, but ended up spending an hour meeting all kinds of people and learning a lot in the process.

Yvon from Orleans, France

very interesting history for this man

Sam from Chennai, India

Nice portrait. Very interesting person. Glad you could meet lot of people and learnt a lot. Yes, learning is a continuos process ... Excellent. :)

NaDu from Köln, Germany

He looks kind-hearted. If you succeed in communicating with people while photographing (sadly I don't) you could perhaps do some kind of social reportage. F.i. I'd be interested in the life of this Romani. I would like to see more of the eyes of this interesting man, but the light circumstances were surely difficult and flash isn't always good.

I like the story, and I Love the portrait.....

Richard from Duns, United Kingdom

Nicely done and interesting background to the shot. It's what makes so many of the photos on AM3 interesting.

DULCIE from Danville, CA, United States

A camera often leads us down new and unexpected roads...this is a grand example of that.
Glad you followed your intuition.

CElliottUK from Reading, United Kingdom

Isn't it odd, sometimes a camera is like a big"This person is a wierdo, avoid at all costs" sometimes it's a reason to stop and chat. Odd how it works out. He looks like a kingly soul, without malice and with a twinkle in his eye, and I bet he really was fascinating to listen to

The Mouse from Glasgow, United Kingdom

Great shot, it's always nice finding out about people, i work with a lot of people i have never met before but still don't have the courage to ask for their picture, well done you.

27 Dec 2010 10:27am

@The Mouse: Well, I still don't like to ask, and in this case he asked me if I would. His wife, however, never allows a picture taken of her because she believes it steals the soul.

hugo poon from hong kong, Hong Kong

This is moving portraiture Bettina! Everyday setting, everyday clothes... yet an exceptional soul and mind through your beautiful lens! Love the mood you enhanced with your lighting and tonality! So familiar and intimate, that I feel like listening to an old friend talking rather than viewing a candid photo of a stranger! 'A man's friendships are one of the best measures of his worth.' Charles Darwin. Congrats on this lovely encounter and getting alot "wealthier"!:-)

Nice portrait of this man, with sweet eyes. He just offers a smile. If you are interested, Mathieu Pernot has worked on French gypsies and he takes a lot of pictures of them. Some could be seen at http://www.mathieupernot.com/
Have a nice day.

So cool that you share this photo and story. You are so friendly and eager to meet people and talk to them, to hear their personal stories. I love that about you, Bettina.

28 Dec 2010 1:35am

clodagh smith from Sacramento, United States

He has a very kind face....guess he has seen a lot. And of course many people who do not have a lot of formal education sometimes are astute students of life. I have had some very nice encounters with people in stores who want to share their stories. One was a man who said I was a dead ringer for someone he knew in Ukraine

28 Dec 2010 1:45am

Becky from los angeles, United States

such a sweet face. He does look at you with care - a beautiful portrait and story - wonderful spirit image.

29 Dec 2010 12:06am

Phil Morris from Saskatoon, Toronto, Canada

His pleasant face belies the history and the amazing life he has had, which can
probably be said of a lot of people, unfortunately photography cannot penetrate
the mystery and pathos of all our lives.

29 Dec 2010 3:36am

@Phil Morris: Or maybe luckily for us. If pictures showed all my mysteries and pathos, I think I'd run the other way at every camera I see! ;)

Philip from Reading, United Kingdom

great.

29 Dec 2010 12:32pm
