Serious Tattoos

Posted by
Bettina (Los Angeles, United States) on 20 May 2010 in Documentary & Street and Portfolio.

Yes, one last iPhone picture. I was about to go back into the theater, leaving Juan Pollo, when I saw this moment. They were so serious looking, and they just happened have tattoos. I liked the way the tattoos and the mural worked together visually.

Apple iPhone 3GS 1/15 second F/2.8 ISO 149 4 mm

Yvon from Orleans, France

wow, what a nice capture

Hoho, one person away from four and only two cups for four or three!
Wondeful ambience! Amazing decoration!
Great Apple iPhone 3GS! I'll try on it if possible!!!

Dana from Burbank, United States

Hip shot! Great background and floor. Fantastic tats, serious clenched-fist vibe A tad soft; blame the phone. I still haven't figured out how to shoot pics with mine.

Fonts from Barcelona, Spain

An environment totally unknown to me and which I can not say anything Bettina! The composition is very good ... three people seem bored together in a bar? The atmosphere is full of objects and drawings that explain where we are ... corraboran and your words! A good point of view. I love the texture of the soil in the foreground! Good Instantly!

20 May 2010 6:12am

@Fonts: This is a Mexican (fast) food restaurant called "Juan Pollo". There are gum machines behind them, where you throw in a coin and get a toy. :)

rem_la from Villiers, France

j'aime bien l'image sur le mur !

20 May 2010 6:12am

Dulcie from Danville, CA, United States

Just another world...... ;-)

Belle photos, belle compo j'aime beaucoup le n/b !! Peace !

20 May 2010 7:26am

Marlowe from Le Havre, France

On this B & W, I feel that tattoos are an extension of the mural!

20 May 2010 7:43am

@Marlowe: That's what I loved in this image. Mixed with the colorful tiles (which you can't see in b/w) and all the toy and gum machines. It was a feast. :)

Mhelene from Paris, France

A great moment in their life that you captured ! Superb portrait !

20 May 2010 8:01am

STEED from Somewhere, France

20 May 2010 8:41am

Sarah from Suisse, Switzerland

Wow - your iphone takes a seriously great photo! Again, love the busyness of this shot with so much to look at. Great capture of a rather somber mood too. Nice!!

20 May 2010 8:44am

@Sarah: The iPhone actually has a pretty wide angle which is nice. I loved the somber looks with the happy, bright, colorful, busy world all around.

Olivier from Manage, Belgium

very good capture

20 May 2010 9:22am

Tamara from Aarschot, Belgium

They don't look very happy lol ! I love this B&W daily scene... a very well photographed moment !

20 May 2010 9:31am

Lougris from Toulouse, France

hum !!
strange atmosphère !!
but excellent picture !!
j'aime beaucoup les expressions des trois personnages qui semblent un peu décalés dans ce décor !!:)

20 May 2010 9:35am

trilliana from Munich, Germany

cool, another iphone, for me? thanx a lot. and i do like it. the kids serious looks contrast the happy athmosphere of trhe taco restaurant, the gummachines and the (probably) colourful painting. a typical view on the bored and angry youth, eh?

20 May 2010 11:04am

mo.langel from Courtelary, Switzerland

Excellent composition! Superb expression, ils n'ont vraiment pas l'air d'être heureux d'être ici! Belle ambiance lourde! J'adore!

20 May 2010 11:10am

✿ Anina ✿ from New Zealand

Excellent! Lovely composition and pov. Their tattoos are almost as 'busy' as the picture against the wall... ;) A superb shot. Two girls one boy...mmm... maybe that's why the one girl looks a bit... upset? :)

20 May 2010 11:14am

JoeB from Brampton, Canada

This is great for a phone pic in B&W, the brightness of the whites to the solid blacks, who doesn't have a tattoo nowadays ?

20 May 2010 11:31am

@JoeB: True. I may be the only one.

MARIANA from Waterloo, Canada

It looks so much Canadian, with these exaggerated tattoos and these blank faces ! I am always trying to refrain of commenting when see the young people like these. That is totally beyond my comprehensions .
Wonderful shot, Bettina !

20 May 2010 12:58pm

@MARIANA: Thanks! I loved the fingers on the temple gesture. I feel that way myself a few times-- a day. ;)

bluechameleon from Vancouver, Canada

They seem to be in deep conversation, planning something....
I like all the elements here, how they all come together and add to the story, piece by piece. Great shot.

20 May 2010 1:02pm

JJ from Jersey City, United States

Such a wonderful atmosphere in this, and quite a few tattoos, Having quite a few myself perhaps more than any of them, especially on my legs I cannot say there excessive, but wondering now if they look better on a younger person rather than me LOL

20 May 2010 1:07pm

@JJ: There were many in attendance that had much more than that. Tattoos are fine. It's the gauged ear lobes that I can't quite get used to yet. But any cultural practice is meaningful in one and shocking in another. It's all relative.

zahra from shiraz, Iran

20 May 2010 1:19pm

Pavan Kaul from Mumbai, India

20 May 2010 2:47pm

clodagh smith from Sacramento, United States

Ha! They fit right in. That mural is like a Wall Tattoo. Cool one!

20 May 2010 2:58pm

Sonia Nansid from Stockholm, Sweden

I saw this pic on my phone from the job, I was sooo impressed when I read it was taken with your Iphone, they are actually really good. The mural fits here perfectly and... I love tattoos!

20 May 2010 3:13pm

Christian from Mantes La Jolie, France

All is relative in fact. Lot of my patients are now tattoos (and many girls). Sometime that's fine.. Sometime not! And sometime it's very conventionnal things (dolphin, roses etc..). So... Everybody is different.. The liberty is to admit that.. :)

20 May 2010 3:27pm

JPS from Le Havre, France

They are happy ???

20 May 2010 4:06pm

@JPS: lol. not really. :)

john4jack from Corvallis, Oregon, United States

Outstanding monochrome.

20 May 2010 5:08pm

Ansie from Paarl, South Africa

An iphone? Great work! The young people look like the wall behind, painted as well!

20 May 2010 5:54pm

Charles Dastodd from Chicago, United States

nice tats and portraits :)

20 May 2010 6:12pm

@Charles Dastodd: Thanks! :) For the props on the tats.

Mark Johnson from Rural Colorado, United States

I love murals like that in a restaurant. There is a lot going on in this image. I don't know why, but the thing that draws my eye is that shiny floor, and how the tiles to have more depth than they should!

20 May 2010 6:15pm

The Mouse from Glasgow, United Kingdom

Good catch on the phone, its a very busy picture.

20 May 2010 6:46pm

Jaap from Friesland, Netherlands

Lovely shot.

20 May 2010 7:09pm

k@ from Paris, France

They chose a wall tattoed too to sit by ;) Their expressions are so deep (tired ? bored ? anxious ?) Interesting moment you caught here.

20 May 2010 8:00pm

@k@: I think clenched fist is tired, finger temple girl is bored, and big white cup is anxious. ;)

Meysam from Montreal, Canada

I liked this shot. Very well done. I'm always afraid of taking photos from people! You are brave ;)

20 May 2010 8:43pm

@Meysam: With the iPhone you can pretend to be texting or dialing or reading your emails. Great for cowards like me. :)

Zorilla from H, T & E, United Kingdom

This is slightly odd - I've just got back from a long trip round Europe on which my camera died about half way through. I wasn't flush enough to replace it or anywhere long enough to get it fixed. For the first day I was nervous, twitchy and not pleasant but then I started discovering the joys of lo-mo photography until I played with a top of the range Nikon and instantly realized nothing less would do. Now I have to find a way to justify buying the damned thing -it'd be so much easier if I could lo-mo like this and the previous image

20 May 2010 10:06pm

@Zorilla: Welcome back! And I know. You can only slum for so long. :)

LauraS from Chico, United States

Excellent study in tattooed locals. Wonderful shot.

21 May 2010 1:00am

Howard F. from South Pasadena, Calif., United States

I like the play of painting on skin and painting on wall. I also like the frame being filled with many many random objects! This is exact the emo look on our faces the day Kurt Cobain passed away. Except, we were at a Mimi's Cafe instead of Juan Pollo...

21 May 2010 1:13am

@Howard F.: Wow, things don't change all that much, I guess. Just the tats. :)

Susan from Sausalito, United States

Fascinating...the mural and the tattoos. This is just great....if not al little dreary.

21 May 2010 3:58am

rainboy from Nainital, India

nice shot. Captured a lot of details.

21 May 2010 4:02am

Philip from Reading, United Kingdom

i wonder when suddenly tattoos become a bit tedious. if you truly want to be individual, then don't bloody get one. personally, i find them incredibly naff. apart from that, bettina, great shot!

21 May 2010 11:46am

keith from killarney, Ireland

great capture

22 May 2010 8:28am

Earnest from Oklahoma, United States

It is well captured and very observant on your part!

22 May 2010 4:06pm

Marie from FRESNES, France

excellente cette scène, belle compo.

24 May 2010 5:45pm

Linda from Reading, United Kingdom

Philip has one, you see. A tiny mistake by a teenage rebel back in the 80s. NOW he wants to be individual...

24 May 2010 11:04pm

Bettina from Los Angeles, United States

Hi Linda! I've seen you ride your bike! Figures about the tattoo. Thanks for sharing. :)
