I need to look back through the chronology of the pictures to remember where this neighborhood was. I believe it was near the Galata Tower. It had a lot of character and charm in its decay.

It makes me wonder if the architecture was changed by moving of the ground it
sits upon. Like it was rolling at one time.

You have to chose between the Asian side & the Galata Tower's (which is not on the Asian side but down Beyoglu, up Galata bridge on the European side ;) Anyway it's super fenced with great colors & old feel ! You ask for my Istanbul ? Here is an idea of it ;) Kiss kiss, my dear.

24 Mar 2011 8:34am

@k@: Yes, a very different Istanbul it is! Yours is alive and vibrant and teeming with faces and children and moments. Mine is devoid of people, under a haze and cloud. I wish I had had much more time to get deeper into the people side of things. But I love the combination. Put your people into my empty streets!

trilliana from Munich, Germany

so much color and artistic decoration with the bricks and fences but at the same time abandoned, lost and seemingly forgotten. i think it doesn't really matter where it was, places like that can be found all over the world. thanks for sharing this extraordinary image.

Was there an architect involved? I love decay in this way.
On a separate note your comment on Phil David Morris's fab photo – Living well is the best revenge – it's been one of my motivators for years. I feel there may be many who feel the same way too on Aminus

24 Mar 2011 9:44am

@Richard: Absolutely. I agree. That's the way to go. You must be having some fantastic revenge, because from the looks of your beautiful pictures, you must be living very well.

Wonderful colours and textures in this shot Bettina! One can definitely see that time has forced them to take more agressive security steps..... ;-)

Jason Kravitz from Brussels, Belgium

Awesome scene and textures. That was one of my favorite things about visiting Istanbul - just wandering neighborhoods and taking in the beautiful buildings, textures and sights. One of my favorite photography memories was just hanging out in one square for a few hours and watching all the different activity going on there.

24 Mar 2011 2:52pm

@Jason Kravitz: Thanks, Jason. Every corner was so evocative in Istanbul. I loved it. I just wish I had had a lot more time.

Denny Jump Photo from Easton, PA, United States

This has so much variety and emotion in it! Like Istanbul, it seems to speak in many languages and act in many ways. This is almost like a piece that has been there for ages, where, as the years pass, different people walk by and add their own little "piece" to it...and you have conveyed it to us for our enjoyment. A very evocative scene Bettina. Fantastic!

Character and flavor- yes! Security- NO. This looks like a place you can get in with a kick to the door. I would love to see this building at the time of conception, I love the brick work and the wrought iron guard. Nice shot.

How beautiful is decay, rendered in crumbling stucco, boarded up Victorian windows, rusting wrought iron and faded brick. Perhaps the sign announces its condemnation. I love the touch of bright weeds and the yellow graffito scrawl.

CATCHLIGHT from Reading, United Kingdom

One can never pass these scenes without doing a snap, why?...are we responding to coffee table photo-books we have all seen and enjoyed. Or is it that these scenes speak to us on a deeper level in that they clearly show a passage of time and human 'workings' that we can relate to?....dunno...

26 Mar 2011 10:14pm

@CATCHLIGHT: Good question. Maybe there's a certain amount of art conditioning inflicted by the coffee tables. But I, personally at least, find the decay of human endeavor so moving. It speaks to the impermanence of our lives, when the endeavors that seem so important are later rendered to ruins, when pride is stripped to illusion. I find these images of dreams gone by just beautiful and sad.
